Memorial Day Weekend is right around the corner, a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and unofficially kick off the summer. Whether you’re looking to commemorate this special day in the American calendar or just enjoy a weekend of fun in the sun, we’ve got your Memorial Day in New Orleans plans covered!
We believe it’s incredibly important to recognize the true meaning behind this day, and there’s no better place to do that than at the globally-acclaimed WWII Museum. Their commemorative events kick off at 10:30 a.m. on Memorial Day when the US Marine Forces Reserve Band will perform a program. Following at 11:00 a.m. will be a ceremony honoring the families of the fallen. At 3:00 p.m., you can join a national moment of silence that ends with the ringing of the Normandy Liberty Bell. While you’re at the museum, you can take in the current exhibit: The Rise and Fall of Hitler’s Germany Tour. All events are free and open to the public while exhibits require standard admission.
Tremé/7th Ward Arts & Culture Festival
A relative newbie on the NOLA festival scene, the Tremé/7th Ward Arts & Culture Festival will take place May 25-26 and celebrate two of the country’s oldest and most notable neighborhoods. There will be neighborhood tours, cultural discussion panels, a bar crawl and of course music, music and more music! Learn more about this amazing local festival here.
New Orleans Greek Festival
Opa! Greek Fest is bringing the party back to Bayou St. John for the 46th time this weekend! Things kick off with a soft opening on Thursday night, a one-mile and 5k race Friday night followed by all the Greek food, wine, dancing and music you can handle through Sunday afternoon. Get your tickets and more information here!
Like any day in NOLA, it’s best spent with family and friends, and weather pending, usually better outdoors! Memorial Day Weekend is no exception, and that’s why we’ve come up with a list of fun activities to enjoy together (hopefully) under the sun.
- Picnic at the park (the Fly, City Park, Louis Armstrong, Audubon, Woldenberg, Coliseum Square, Palmer, Crescent, etc.) Pack your favorite poboys or pour out a pot of crawfish in one of these picturesque New Orleans gems.
- Get on the water. Memorial Day Weekend is synonymous with being on the water. So whether it’s kayaking on Bayou St. John, paddle boating in City Park, hopping on a steamboat or taking a swamp tour, just get on the water!
- BBQ. It would be a real shame to not eat something off of the grill this weekend. If you’re not the one manning the tongs, check out one of our favorite BBQ joints around town.
- Snoballs. Let’s be honest. It’s going to be hot. Which means it’s going to be time for snoballs. Pick out your favorite place off our list of favorite places and cool down with a delicious treat!
