Planning Your Ideal New Orleans Weekend

By Rachel Rae Westfall | November 8, 2018

In Jimmy V’s famous Espy’s speech, he describes three things we should do every day. He said we should laugh, we should think, and we should have our emotions moved to tears. He explains that if we did that every day, we’d have something special. With those wise words in mind, we think there are three things you should do to have an ideal New Orleans weekend.

With that being said, you should eat great food, you should share drinks with great friends, and you should get outside and enjoy the scenery. To help you plan out your ideal New Orleans weekend, we asked a few friends what they loved to do during their days of freedom.

Everybody’s working for the weekend.  * You’re welcome for putting that song in your head *

Eat Great Food

We all have those lists of restaurants we have handy to send to friends who come into town. If yours is anything like ours, it’s a lengthy list. From gumbo to beignets, you can’t go wrong with any meal in town.

Friend 1: There’s nothing more New Orleans than Jaques-Imo’s. From walking right through the kitchen to starting with the Alligator Cheesecake, I love the whole experience.

Friend 2: If I’m choosing one place to eat in town, it’s Cochon. It’s a fantastic spot to get a ton of tapas-style small plate with friends.

Friend 3: For me, if I don’t get a po-boy, my weekend wouldn’t be complete. Of course, everyone has their favorites, but if I have to pick one, let’s go get a surf and turf po-boy at my favorite spot, Parkway Bakery & Tavern.

New Orleans is such a great drinking town. There are local classics like Sazerac and craft breweries pumping out delicious new beer. No matter what part of town you’re in, you can throw a dart at a map and land in a great bar.

Friend 1: For drinks with friends, my go-to is Bouligny Tavern on Magazine. It’s got an old-school vibe, a great side patio, and the mixologists whip up fantastic drinks.

Friend 2: Ever since my days at Tulane, we’ve been going to The Columns. It’s right off the streetcar line, we know the friendly bartenders, and there’s just something very NOLA about drinking on the porch of a really old hotel.

Friend 3: There’s a good chance you’ll find us at Fat Harry’s, but my new favorite place in town is the Tchoup Yard. It’s a much needed big outdoor patio bar that has bushwhackers, margaritas and a great beer selection.

We live in a state nicknamed “A Sportsman’s Paradise.” We have beautiful state parks, a ton of water to play in, and a ton of places to simply enjoy the aforementioned food and drinks outside.

Friend 1: I’m a little biased because it’s in my front yard, but my favorite place to be outside is at The Fly. We love to bring crawfish and beer and watch the big tankers roll down the Mississippi.

Friend 2: My girlfriend and I love to stroll along the River in Woldenberg Park. It’s fun to look at the skyline and the boats passing by, and you’re just a short walk away from the French Quarter.

Friend 3: If we’re making outdoor weekend plans, I hope it includes kayaking on Bayou St. John. I have my own Kayak, but our friends usually rent from Bayou Paddlesports. You can’t beat an afternoon on the water with the beautiful views of City Park.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to do to make an ideal New Orleans weekend. Our local advice for you is to eat great food, share drinks with great friends, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors!
